When your garage door is not working right, it may be time to replace its parts. Luckily, a variety of garage door assembly parts are easy to install and add charm to your home's exterior.
First, assemble the motor and rail as directed in your opener's installation instructions. Then, slide the carriage (also known as a trolley) over the rail. This will pull your door open.
Once the opener is assembled, attach the safety device to the wall. This safety feature allows your motor to shut down when something obstructs the path of the door's closing motion, which can help prevent an accident from occurring.
Next, assemble the header bracket. This mounting bracket secures the garage door opener's carriage tube to the wall above the opening. The exact location depends on the type of door, but it is usually installed at the door center point.
Before assembling the header bracket, use a level to determine the highest point for the door's travel. This is the point where the springs can provide the most resistance to lift the door.
Measure the height of the header bracket to make sure it is positioned at this highest point, and then attach to the wall with the appropriate fasteners. This should be at least two inches above the top of your door's panel.
Set the torsion rod into the side header brackets, and then use a pair of locking pliers to deter the rod from spinning while you tighten your springs. If you haven't already done so, take a few moments to read through your garage door manufacturer's manual to learn how to adjust the torsion rod.
Once you've determined the correct tension for your springs, thread the lift cable through the bottom of the door and insert into the cable drum. Once the cable is in place, tighten the set screw on each spring onto the torsion tube. Repeat for the other side.
After you've removed the old torsion springs, be sure to use a torsion spring measuring tape to check that both torsion springs are matched up to their respective tube shafts and have equal cycles. If one spring breaks, replace both torsion springs so they have the same cycle capacity.
Lastly, you should also verify that the door and vertical track are plumb. This is a critical step for your door to function properly.
Pre-drill the lag screws for the flag brackets and track brackets. You need to be sure the lag screws go into sound framing, but you can't fully tighten them until all of the vertical tracks are secured up the wall and all the panels are lined up correctly.
