Components of garage door end caps

Posted by Admin
Garage door end caps are a key structural element on the ends of sections, providing strength and rigidity. They are made of galvanized 23-gauge steel that resists bending and corrosion. They also provide a more solid support for hinges and struts by connecting the two walls of each section with mechanical interlocking joints that are much stronger than just glue.
They improve thermal break efficiency by preventing energy from passing through the end of the section.
kiln-dried wood end blocks prevent the transfer of energy from one side of the door to the other by separating the insulation from the steel. They also allow for better fastening of the end hinges by allowing the lag screws to engage 8 threads into the wood, compared to 2 or 3 with a steel cap alone. They also protect the end of the section from water and jets from car washes.
Wood End Blocks
Located at the ends of the sections, these heavy duty wood blocks made from kiln-dried pine add stability to hinges and improve the thermal break by preventing thermal bridging. They also ensure better fastening of the end hinges when compared to steel caps using self-tapping screws that engage only 2 or 3 threads.
Weather Stripping
Weather stripping is a crucial part of your garage door's insulation because it prevents costly leakage of indoor air. Over time, this air loss can add up to a large energy bill.
The type of weather stripping you choose depends on your needs and budget. For example, felt is cheap and easy to cut and install but it doesn't wear very well. Foam is marginally more expensive but it wears better and insulates better than felt.
Nail-on metal weatherstripping is available in spring V-shaped strips and tubular seals. It is more durable than adhesive-backed foam and can seal inconsistently sized gaps. However, it is also more difficult to install.
Pressure-sensitive adhesive-backed foam is easy to apply. It is inexpensive and available in a wide variety of thicknesses and lengths. It seals out cold air and noise from drafts, and silences slamming doors. It is best applied in the warmer months because the foam can deteriorate quickly when exposed to freezing temperatures.
Hinges
Hinges are a vital component of sectional garage doors and allow the door to open and close. They are available in a variety of formats, sizes and thicknesses (gauge) that apply to commercial or residential garage doors. They are usually identified by an engraved number that corresponds with their location on the door panels.
A damaged hinge that is loose or jiggling can indicate that the metal is wearing out and that it should be replaced immediately. It is also important to inspect hinges regularly for signs of warping, bending or breaks in the metal. They should be lubricated with an appropriate lubricant to keep them from becoming stiff or hard to open and closed. Truck hinges are designed for more opening cycles than residential and commercial hinges, so they must be able to withstand heavy weight and stress.
